Public Consultation on Implementation proposal for language-aware assessments is open until 6th November!

Following the adoption of the Endorsement Framework in June 2025, the first Actionable Policy Resource (nominated Type A output) is available for consideration by the community. The CoARA Working Group on Multilingualism and language biases in research assessment has submitted an Implementation Proposal which has now passed into the Community Consultation phase of the Endorsement process and is open for public consultation.

The WG invites the representatives of CoARA member organisations, CoARA National Chapters and CoARA Working Groups, as well as interested experts, to provide feedback on the Implementation proposal by the 6th of November.

By providing feedback in the open consultation, reviewers will be credited with their valuable contributions upon final publication. All feedback will be considered before the final version of the Implementation Proposal is submitted to the CoARA Steering-Board for endorsement and inclusion in the CoARA Toolbox, pending final review.

The Implementation proposal aims to “facilitate the implementation of CoARA Commitments by recognising and rewarding multilingualism in the practice of science, in scholarly publications and in academic communications, and by addressing language biases in assessments and evaluations.”

The output, currently open for review, is structured by four proposals that focus on the following streams:

  • Proposal 1: Make multilingualism a value in research assessment
  • Proposal 2: Assess and improve language diversity, competences and practices
  • Proposal 3: Create expectations and criteria for multilingualism
  • Proposal 4: Integrate multilingualism into assessment processes

The WG Multilingualism will also host an upcoming webinar titled, “Language-Aware Assessments,” on 21 October 2025 at 15h30-16h30 CET. The webinar will present the results of the Implementation proposal and the results of the Multilingualism Landscape Report and will offer an opportunity to learn about the findings, as well as to reflect on the next steps for embedding multilingualism in research assessment practices.
